Our compost really is hot!
Last week the compost was turned and this time we were there to witness it. Judging when to turn is based on many variables – external ambient temperature, humidity and compost wetness, initial raw materials and speed with which seeds break down and accessibility for the tractor etc.
We have 6 compost bays. One of the bays stores manure, which is rotted down until we can use it. Raw material is piled up in another, gradually turned and moved until it is fine enough to spread on our plots. If necessary (depending on what is being grown) there is one final stage – sieving the finished product.
