Plenty of wildlife

The site is thriving with life — from the deafening evening bird chorus to the emergence of tadpoles in the ponds. Hedgehogs have been spotted too, though not all make it safely across the roads.

Less expected is the scarcity of ladybirds.
“There’s loads of honeydew on the sycamores,” Ian says, “so we’d usually see more greenfly predators by now. We’ll keep watching.”

Back in April tadpoles were spotted on the pond. Who knew we had a pond!?

What some people call a pond others refer to as “that old corner bath’, repurposed to collect the run off water from one of the poly tunnels. Water is something that has to be carefully managed – it’s an essential and valuable resource. Over the years we have developed lots of ways to collect and retain water. In addition to providing us with water for our poly tunnels and plants, the collecting points have created a new environment for wildlife.

The tadpoles, are getting bigger having turned into froglets. We wondered if the word froglet was a real thing – apparently it refers to tadpoles with legs and a tail. Now we are looking forward to spotting frogs hopping around !

And, now at the beginning of June, grasshoppers making an early appearance.
