Our Scarecrow Day

The sun shone on our Scarecrows!

For the first time in 4 years grey skies and cold winds were replaced by blue sky and sunshine to welcome a new crop of scarecrows.

In addition to the competition, children were involved in a trail on the fields, making mini scarecrows for their own gardens and decorating primrose plant pots for Mothers Day.  In the background a busy group of volunteers were building new raised beds and preparing a patch of land  for new growing area…  It was a busy morning!

Our judges had a really hard time deciding from:  The Gruffalo,  Mary Poppins, The Cat in the Hat, Gangsta Granny  (all from Prudhoe Castle First School), a Hungry Caterpillar (Ovingham Craft Club), Mr Scarecrow, and The Stick Man (Ovingham Krafty Kids)… For beauty we had The Hungry Caterpillar, scariness we had Mr Scarecrow and The Stick Man and for portrayal of a book character we had Gansta Granny – but everyone one was a winner!  We hope they will scare the pests.  Many thanks to everyone who helped, produced a scarecrow and judged – particular thanks to Forum Books for their support and Jake for bringing his judging skills and enthusiasm on a day off!!

The next ‘Growing Gang’ session for children and young people is planned for Saturday 29th April, if you’d like to join in contact us, admin@golocalfood.org.uk
